Chiropractic Care Can Help Effectively Eliminate Hip Pain

By Troy Leonard Hammerstrom

Dealing with hip pain can be very challenging to those who suffer from it and it can interfere with their activities. This discomfort can range from a dull ache to very intense and it can sometimes be felt into the back and thighs as well. The most effective strategy for alleviating this problem is to find the root cause and correct it. Chiropractors are holistic healers who can provide patients with safe, natural alternative therapy that will accomplish this.

The large hip joint is located where the femur connects to the pelvis and is subject to various stresses which can lead to discomfort. There may be an acute injury or condition present which causes inflammation, cartilage may have worn out, or the pain may also be referred from another part of the body. Chiropractors always attempt to pinpoint the cause of pain before addressing the symptoms alone.

The sacroiliac joints are situated in the lower back, above and on either side of the tailbone. This is one area which is prone to misalignment of the bones and connective tissues due to pregnancy, childbirth, and some types of physical activities, when this happens it can sometimes result in discomfort in the hips.

The first step in treating this problem will be to reduce swelling, and next to restore normal mobility to the joint. The chiropractic practitioner will be able to determine what the underlying condition is by thoroughly examining the patient and taking a detailed health history from him or her. There may be the need for x-rays or other diagnostic tests as well. Once this issue has been identified, the best course of therapy will be recommended.

Most patients respond best when a combination of healing methods are applied and any necessary lifestyle changes that the chiropractor recommends are made. Medications and surgery are not part of the therapeutic regimen in chiropractic care, rather their use is discouraged as it is believed to overlook the underlying cause of the problem and delay healing. It is important to not put off proper chiropractic attention in order to prevent permanent joint damage.

When the soreness is caused by misalignment of the sacroiliac joints or elsewhere, the chiropractor will most likely apply some adjustments to the affected joint to restore normal alignment. The practitioner may also use massage or apply ice to alleviate swelling and encourage healing. The patient may be instructed how to perform a set of passive range of motion or stretching exercises which are designed to restore mobility and can be done easily at home.

A nutritional supplement that will speed up healing may also be prescribed for the patient. A good quality fish oil capsule is often recommended by the practitioner. These have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and encourage healthy nervous tissue in the body.

The goal in planning therapy for the patient with hip pain is to encourage moderate movement but not so much that it increases the soreness. With the right combination of physiotherapy, exercise, and nutritional support, most patients will notice a gradual improvement over a short time although this may take longer in more severe cases.
