When Coping With Mental Illness In The Family Becomes A Reality

By Jeffrey Ross

People don't realize how difficult it is to manage someone who is having serious psychological problems. Coping with mental illness in the family is something that one needs to focus on. If you are new to this, then you need to learn about the disorder and what the individual is going through.

Fortunately, these days, one is more open about things like depression and anxiety. The suicide rate has risen as more people face difficulties in various circumstances. Fortunately, there is also treatment where individuals can go to get support. However, the first place where individuals expect to get this support is from family members.

It is difficult when their spouse or child continues to blame them or makes them feel guilty. It is not easy to tell yourself that this is all about the disorder, especially when you are more of a sensitive person. It is particularly difficult for the parent because one will think they have done something wrong somewhere along the line.

Someone with borderline personality disorder will have moments when they react in an extremely negative way. They can begin to shout at the top of their voice. Physical abuse is common. A lot of blame is also something that goes with the package. Family members may feel that they have to walk around on eggshells in a case like this.

Sometimes, family members just don't know enough about the illness. The first thing that they think about is to send the individual to a home. Finding out more about the illness is the first step that one should take. A specialized therapist will be able to help here. Sometimes, people are not on medication. They will have serious depression, so of course, they are going to lie in bed all day in a catatonic state.

In a case like this, therapy is imperative. It can ruin a child's life when they see their mom or dad acting in this way. When they see mom or dad filled with rage or they discover that they have been sleeping all day, they usually begin to think they have done something wrong. This is the way in which a child will think. However, it is not the case at all and this is why one needs to take children into consideration as well.

Kids can also play the part of the parent when mom or dad can't look after themselves. Divorce or separation often happens when a partner can't take the situation any more. In the case of a single parent, children simply have to take over. They will be the ones to cook the evening meal and to basically take care of their parent. In addition to this, they have to look after themselves as well.

Parents are often hurt the most. They may be feeling guilty or they may blame themselves. A lot of parents keep on asking themselves where they went wrong. But so often, this is simply an illness just like anything else in life that crops up. One shouldn't feel bad about this, no matter how old the child is. It is important simply to offer support, which comes in the form of compassion and understanding.
