Fresh And Effective ADHD Classroom Accommodations

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder makes it problematic for affected students to learn in class. They are known to be hyperactive, impulsive and to lack focus. Learning becomes difficult when it is conducted in an ordinary classroom. Education officers and teachers require ADHD classroom accommodations that enable such students to learn regardless of their difficulties. The students need to be accommodated on areas such as their positions in class, activities, organization of work and the general environment.

The student should sit closest to the teacher yet away from doors and windows. This minimizes the possibility of distraction from outside. When he or she sits next to the teacher, there will be a greater sense of supervision. Quick action can be taken without causing disruption to other students in the class. The student also feels as though all the attention is on him or her.

Modify the sitting area by providing more leg room. Such students feel suffocated by cluttered spaces. They also are uncomfortable with a lot of contact, thus the need for space. Provide seat cushions and resistance bands alongside foot rests for such students. This enables the students to move with ease. Consequently, such a student will find it easier to focus and easily move whenever the need arises.

ADHD students have a huge challenge with getting organized. You need to consider them by allowing use of notebooks for assignments. They need to have extra text or reference books they can use at home. Provide distinct folders or apparatus for learning gadgets, books, pens, and such other accessories. This will make their desk better organized.

A routine will help your student to be more organized. Routines involve repetitive actions with no room for idleness, lost concentration or divided focus. The best way to implement this is to have a daily routine that the student will adapt automatically. Even without supervision, such a student will complete his tasks. Find a minimized color code for materials to be used for each subject.

Assignments and tests are an ordinary part of any learning environment. Students with attention deficit disorder are likely to be branded as poor in class. The remedy is to provide shorter tests as opposed to the long ones designed for normal students that also capture a lot of questions. The space provided for the test should also be quiet to enhance concentration. Provide extra time for the student to complete his tasks.

ADHD students should have the privilege of answering questions orally as opposed to writing the answers. Use word processing software during assignments and tests instead of telling them to write. If the test is partially done, appreciate the effort and mark based on what was completed. Avoid paying any attention to neatness of the work.

You need to pay special attention to the ADHD student. This includes checking to ensure that such a student has understood the lesson, allowing assistance with note taking from another student, using pictures and other images to teach and using specialized signals or gestures to capture the attention of your student. Remember that each student is unique and must be accommodated in a different way.
