Some people believe that chiropractors normally do not have academic qualifications, but this is wrong. Chiropractors complete post-secondary education that takes over 8 years before they are licensed to work with clients from the public. Nevertheless, many of them normally have 4 years of higher education, with a few chiropractors moving beyond this point of academic qualification. Post-secondary education, (4 years) usually takes over 4, 200 instructional hours.

Training during a chiropractic graduate program is divided into four parts depending on the year. Students cover different courses each year with each year being an advanced continuation of the previous one. During the first year, students cover courses in general anatomy, biochemistry, spinal anatomy, and chiropractic principles. The second year covers courses in pathology, imaging interpretation, research methods, clinical orthopedics, and chiropractic procedures.

During the third year if training, students usually go for internship in a suitable establishment to advance their skills in chiropractic. Here, they find a chance to put their skills to use and gain necessary experience. During internship when students are in their fourth year, they work under the close supervision of an accomplished chiropractor. Students have to complete rotations in a hospital setting or a veteran clinic. One is cleared to graduate after they complete this internship and clinical rotations. They may also choose to advance their education by joining another program for a masters degree. However, like stated earlier, most of them choose to look for employment at this point.

Before looking for employment or working with patients, it is important for a chiropractor to get licensed. A license is usually offered by the state through a specialized board. The same board also provides certification. Certification is available in a wide range of fields, including acupuncture, rehabilitation, sports medicine, and nutrition among many others. At this point, one is given the title of doctor of chiropractor.

Given the kind of training and certification that chiropractors go through, it is safe to say that they are as qualified as any practitioner in the field of medicine. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic training is as thorough as that of medical doctors. In fact, the two fields involve the same number of classroom hours.

These professionals qualify to treat a lot of medical conditions. Among the conditions they treat include, neck pain, pain in the joints, headaches, whiplash-related conditions, and lower back pain. They also get more experienced as they continue working in this field.
