By Barbara Gray

There being so many ways of conveying information, the method used will always dictate how information is being communicated. Apart from dermatologists being qualified in their job a wrong choice of the communication model can affect their objectives. In case you are a dermatologist or you are planning to be one the following methods will help you carry out your Dermatology Patient Education effectively.

The mostly used traditional form of communication used by health practitioners is through the mouth. Though it is time consuming and requires a lot of energy this method is highly preferred. This is because the practitioner is able to communicate face to face with the patient. Also there is always a room for clarity for the sick person in case some of the points are not clear. The patient can also ask questions and involve their doctor in to an interactive conversation.

However, skin complications have been reported to claim a lot lives every day due to the continued use of over the counter drugs. Others go for cosmetic solutions when such incidences arise. These products interfere with the anatomy of our skins due to the harmful chemicals which are used in manufacturing them. Dermatologists know the harmful chemicals in these products and can recommend a solution to the problem.

Studies have shown that some of the most common skin cancer complications are as a result of use of these products. As much as dermatologists are fighting tirelessly on the use of these products on the skin, so many people are neglecting this advice.

Dermatologists are well qualified in dealing and management of all types of skin complications. This is because they well understand how our skins anatomy and how it works. They can also suggest best management practices during early stages which mean one does not need to take medication but rather apply those techniques in restoring back their skins.

This education mode is very informative and can help improve the patients memory due to the visual stimulation. Another benefit of using videotapes is that one can replay the clip for the number of times they wish. It has also been reported that patients who use video tapes have lower anxiety level compared to those who do not.

Another method which can be used in educating patients is the written method. This involves giving your patient a booklet which they are expected to read. As much as the method can be effective, it can also be affected by literacy levels of the patient. It is not highly advisable for dermatologists to use written materials for their patients who are illiterate.

The internet is also another way of conveying patient information. Through the websites, dermatologists can provide informative information on disease complication and solutions on how to go about the situation. In addition to the written information they should also provide video clips. They should also remember to warn patients on using medication which have not been prescribed by a health practitioner. Proper use of these methods will help achieve the objective and also reduce the number of infections affecting people today.
